Der Hexenturm ist nicht nur ein Rest der Treysaer Stadtbefestigung. Er ist auch ein Ort, an dem eine konkrete menschliche Geschichte greifbar wird: die Geschichte von Katharina Schrempf.
Für das Jahr 1610 ist ein Hexenprozess gegen Katharina Schrempf zu Treysa archivalisch belegt. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde sie im Hexenturm eingekerkert – nach der überlieferten Darstellung nur für wenige Tage, aber in einem dunklen, engen Loch, das den Namen des Turmes mit harter Wirklichkeit füllt.
Der Fall zeigt, wie schnell Angst, Verdacht und Gerede in der frühen Neuzeit gefährlich werden konnten. Es ging nicht um Märchenhexen, sondern um Menschen. Um Frauen und Männer, die in Verfahren hineingerieten, in denen Anschuldigungen, Aberglaube, soziale Spannungen und obrigkeitliche Macht zusammenwirkten.
Deshalb verdient Katharina Schrempf hier einen eigenen Platz. Sie steht stellvertretend für jene, deren Namen fast verschwunden wären, wenn nicht Akten, Erinnerung und heutige Vermittlung sie wieder sichtbar machen würden. Der Hexenturm erzählt damit nicht nur von Mauern und Verteidigung – sondern von Unrecht, Angst und der Verantwortung, genauer hinzuschauen.
The Hexenturm is not only a remnant of Treysa’s town fortifications. It is also a place where a concrete human story becomes tangible: the story of Katharina Schrempf.
A witch trial against Katharina Schrempf of Treysa is documented for the year 1610. In this context she was imprisoned in the Hexenturm – according to the surviving account only for a few days, but in a dark, narrow prison hole that gives the tower’s name a harsh reality.
The case shows how quickly fear, suspicion and rumour could become dangerous in the early modern period. This was not about fairy-tale witches, but about real people: women and men drawn into proceedings in which accusations, superstition, social tensions and official power interacted.
That is why Katharina Schrempf deserves a place of her own here. She stands for those whose names might almost have disappeared if records, memory and today’s interpretation did not make them visible again. The Hexenturm therefore tells not only of walls and defence, but also of injustice, fear and the responsibility to look more closely.
Le Hexenturm n’est pas seulement un vestige des fortifications de Treysa. C’est aussi un lieu où une histoire humaine concrète devient tangible : celle de Katharina Schrempf.
Un procès de sorcellerie contre Katharina Schrempf de Treysa est attesté pour l’année 1610. Dans ce contexte, elle fut emprisonnée dans le Hexenturm – selon la tradition conservée seulement quelques jours, mais dans un trou sombre et étroit qui donne au nom de la tour une réalité dure.
Ce cas montre avec quelle rapidité la peur, le soupçon et les rumeurs pouvaient devenir dangereux au début de l’époque moderne. Il ne s’agissait pas de sorcières de conte, mais de personnes réelles : des femmes et des hommes entraînés dans des procédures où accusations, superstition, tensions sociales et pouvoir officiel se mêlaient.
C’est pourquoi Katharina Schrempf mérite ici une place particulière. Elle représente ceux dont les noms auraient presque disparu si les archives, la mémoire et la médiation actuelle ne les rendaient pas de nouveau visibles. Le Hexenturm ne parle donc pas seulement de murs et de défense, mais aussi d’injustice, de peur et de la responsabilité de regarder de plus près.
El Hexenturm no es solo un resto de las fortificaciones de Treysa. También es un lugar donde una historia humana concreta se vuelve tangible: la historia de Katharina Schrempf.
Para el año 1610 está documentado un proceso por brujería contra Katharina Schrempf de Treysa. En este contexto fue encarcelada en el Hexenturm, según la tradición conservada solo durante unos días, pero en un agujero oscuro y estrecho que da una realidad dura al nombre de la torre.
El caso muestra con qué rapidez el miedo, la sospecha y los rumores podían volverse peligrosos en la Edad Moderna temprana. No se trataba de brujas de cuento, sino de personas reales: mujeres y hombres arrastrados a procedimientos en los que se mezclaban acusaciones, superstición, tensiones sociales y poder oficial.
Por eso Katharina Schrempf merece aquí un lugar propio. Representa a quienes casi habrían desaparecido si los archivos, la memoria y la interpretación actual no volvieran a hacerlos visibles. El Hexenturm no habla solo de muros y defensa, sino también de injusticia, miedo y la responsabilidad de mirar con más atención.
