Der Hexenturm ist nicht nur ein Rest der Treysaer Stadtbefestigung. Er ist auch ein Ort, an dem eine konkrete menschliche Geschichte greifbar wird: die Geschichte von Katharina Schrempf.

Für das Jahr 1610 ist ein Hexenprozess gegen Katharina Schrempf zu Treysa archivalisch belegt. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde sie im Hexenturm eingekerkert – nach der überlieferten Darstellung nur für wenige Tage, aber in einem dunklen, engen Loch, das den Namen des Turmes mit harter Wirklichkeit füllt.

Der Fall zeigt, wie schnell Angst, Verdacht und Gerede in der frühen Neuzeit gefährlich werden konnten. Es ging nicht um Märchenhexen, sondern um Menschen. Um Frauen und Männer, die in Verfahren hineingerieten, in denen Anschuldigungen, Aberglaube, soziale Spannungen und obrigkeitliche Macht zusammenwirkten.

The Hexenturm is not only a remnant of Treysa’s town fortifications. It is also a place where a concrete human story becomes tangible: the story of Katharina Schrempf.

A witch trial against Katharina Schrempf of Treysa is documented for the year 1610. In this context she was imprisoned in the Hexenturm – according to the surviving account only for a few days, but in a dark, narrow prison hole that gives the tower’s name a harsh reality.

The case shows how quickly fear, suspicion and rumour could become dangerous in the early modern period. This was not about fairy-tale witches, but about real people: women and men drawn into proceedings in which accusations, superstition, social tensions and official power interacted.

El caso muestra con qué rapidez el miedo, la sospecha y los rumores podían volverse peligrosos en la Edad Moderna temprana.
