Vom Kloster zur Stadtkirche From monastery to town church Du couvent à l’église municipale Del convento a la iglesia municipal
Jahrhundert in Treysa bestand.
Treysa’s town church tells a different story from the Totenkirche. It is not a ruin, but a church space still in use today. Its roots lie in the former monastery church of St Mary, belonging to the Dominican monastery that existed in Treysa from the late 13th century.
The Gothic hall church was built after 1300. The Dominicans were a preaching order; their monasteries were deliberately established in towns, close to the people. This place therefore stands for pastoral care, preaching, education and urban religious life in the Middle Ages.
With the Reformation, its use changed fundamentally. The Dominican monastery was dissolved, and since 1531 the former monastery church has been used as a Protestant town church. The monastery church became the parish church of the town – a clear turning point in Treysa’s church and urban history.
Today the town church is not only a place of worship, but also an open place for visitors, cyclists and pilgrims. It connects medieval architecture, Reformation change and present-day encounter. That is its particular strength: it is not a monument that only looks back, but a space that is still alive.
